Ostrog Monastery clings to a sheer rock face 900 metres above the Zeta Valley, its whitewashed basilica and monastic cells hewn directly into the limestone cliff. Founded in the seventeenth century by Metropolitan Vasilije of Herzegovina, who later became Saint Basil of Ostrog, the complex occupies two levels connected by a serpentine footpath through oak forest. The Upper Monastery houses the relics of Saint Basil in a rock-carved chapel whose walls bear no mortar — medieval masons shaped the interior by chiselling the living stone, leaving natural fissures as windows and the mountain itself as the rear wall. The site receives over a million pilgrims annually, Orthodox and Catholic alike, making it the most visited religious monument in Montenegro and one of the Balkans' most active pilgrimage destinations. The journey from Kotor crosses three distinct geographic zones in under two hours. The coastal road climbs past Budva and the Adriatic littoral before turning inland at Cetinje, the old royal capital, where the route enters the Dinaric Alps through a series of switchbacks that rise above the Skadar basin. At Danilovgrad the highway splits — one branch continues north toward Nikšić and the Bosnian frontier, the other threads the Zeta River canyon to reach the monastery access road. The final approach is a narrow asphalt ribbon cut into the cliff, with hairpin turns offering unobstructed views of the valley floor far below. Most organised excursions include stops at Rijeka Crnojevića on Lake Skadar or a detour through Morača Canyon, where the thirteenth-century Morača Monastery preserves frescoes by the master Georgije Mitrofanović. The Lower Monastery, built in the nineteenth century, serves as the working monastic community and guest quarters. Pilgrims traditionally begin here before ascending the 800-metre footpath to the Upper Monastery, a twenty-minute climb through scrub oak and juniper. The path is lined with crutches and prosthetics left by visitors who attribute cures to Saint Basil's intercession. Inside the Upper Monastery, the Chapel of the Holy Cross occupies a shallow cave whose ceiling drips mineral water year-round — tradition holds that the spring appeared miraculously during the monastery's construction. The main church, dedicated to the Presentation of the Mother of God, measures just six metres across, its interior illuminated solely by votive candles and a single oculus piercing the rock above the iconostasis. Frescoes from the 1660s survive on the south wall, their pigments mixed with local ochre and lapis lazuli imported from Afghan mines via Venetian traders in Cattaro, the Italianate name for Kotor. A day trip from Kotor to Ostrog Monastery typically departs before 08:00 to secure arrival during the cooler morning hours and avoid the midday press of tour coaches. The site imposes no entrance fee, though donation boxes support the monastic community and ongoing conservation work. Visitors are expected to observe modest dress — shoulders and knees covered — and maintain silence within the chapels. Photography is permitted in the courtyards but prohibited inside the rock churches. The monastery remains an active religious institution, and liturgies are celebrated daily at 06:00 and 17:00, the latter marking the close of public visiting hours.
